The 28th Seoul Music Awards ceremony was held on the 15th of January. It was a great night for the South Korean group BTS who won the grand prize, also known as the Daesang. They were offered this honour last year as well. During his acceptance speech, RM said, “I sincerely thank [BTS’ fandom] ARMY all over the world for giving us this Daesang twice, when it’s hard for an artist to receive it even once”. The band won two more prizes: best album for Love Yourself: Tear and a Bongsang, that is, a monthly award.
The British singer Sam Fender has recently revealed his latest song called “Play God”. This track is actually a re-release for the winner of the 2018 Brits Critics Choice Award. It was initially his debut single in 2017.
Through this song, Fender is looking at the state of the world. He asserts that “Play God” is set in “an alternate dystopian reality that shares similarities with our own world”. He further advances that he wrote the track a few years ago. At that time, there were a lot of changes happening in both the UK and in the USA. He says, “I had just entered my twenties, I was anxious about the future of the world and its leaders, and it didn’t help that I’d just read George Orwell’s 1984 at the time. As you can imagine, I was pretty paranoid!”
Along with this reveal, Sam Fender also announced that he will go on tour across the UK in May. His schedule is as follows:
2, Ritz, Manchester
3, QMU, Glasgow
6, Shepherds Bush Empire, London
10, The Institute, Birmingham
12, Lemon Grove, Exeter
13, SWX, Bristol.
Tickets will be available as from the 18th of February. Moreover, the singer will perform at Neighbourhood Weekender on the 25th and 26th of May.
The 13th of January was a great night for Lady Gaga. “Shallow”, performed by the singer and Bradly Cooper was titled best song at the 2019 Critics’ Choice Awards. This new hit is part of the film “A Star is Born”. The artist accepted the prize, which was presented by Mandy Moore and Ricky Martin, alongside its co-writer Anthony Rossomando. The track is performing is very well at the awards. It also won ‘Best Original Song’ at the 2019 Golden Globes ceremony.
After months of speculation, Maroon 5 has finally announced a news that will please both sports and music fans. The group revealed that they will participate in the Super Bowl LIII halftime show on the 3rd of February. They disclosed this via a one-minute promotional clip. The National Football League released an official statement saying that rappers Travis Scott and Big Boi will join the band in Atlanta. The short video shows Maroon 5 backstage preparing to perform. Glimpses of the other two artists are also included.
There is some good news for fans of LCD Soundsystem. The rock band recently revealed that their upcoming live album will be released on the 8th of February. Named “Electric Lady Sessions”, it was recorded at the eponymous New York studio. Its full tracklist was also disclosed. Some of the songs are titled “seconds”, “call the police” or “oh baby”. The first announcement regarding this live album was made in November 2018. The group had shared their cover of the track “(We Don’t Need This) Fascist Groove Thang” to preview the record.
The famous singer Lady Gaga recently acted in the movie “A Star Is Born”. Thanks to her spectacular performance as the film’s leading character named Ally, she was nominated in the category “Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama” for the 2019 Golden Globe Awards. Before entering the auditorium at the Beverly Hilton Hotel for the ceremony, the artist talked a bit about her role. She revealed that she “had to work really hard to build this character, because quite honestly, she’s nothing like me”. Do not forget to watch “A Star Is Born” if you are a fan of the singer.
The end of the year 2018 was a good one for 21 Savage. His album “I Am > I Was” was number one on the Billboard 200 chart. The artist started 2019 with a similar spirit. He has been at the same position for two consecutive weeks.
The Atlanta rapper sold a total of 65,000 copies of the album in the second week of its release. This is a decrease of 51% from its debut week. However, as there has been no significant launch since the beginning of the year, it remained at number one. This is because we are no longer in the Christmas season and no new albums premiered in the current Top 10 of the chart. It features compilations that dominated the Billboard 200 in 2018. For instance, Post Malone’s “Beerbongs & Bentleys” is at number four, Drake’s “Scorpio” is at the sixth position and “Astroworld” by Travis Scott is at number seven.
A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie’s “Hoodie SZN” also followed the lead of 21 Savage. It remained at the second position on the chart for two consecutive weeks. While some may complain about a lack of excitement for the opening of 2019, it is very likely that the Billboard 200 chart will be stagnant next week as well.
